Security Film Strength: The Zones of Defense Approach to Security Glazing
Not every window faces the same threat. FSJ Tactical's three-zone approach matches security film, security glazing, and bullet resistant glazing to the real risk at every opening.
When people ask "how strong is security film?", the honest answer is: it depends on where it's installed and what it's up against. The Zones of Defense approach answers a better question: what level of protection does each opening actually need? It's how FSJ Tactical builds security glazing plans that deliver real protection without overspending.
More Than One Type of Protection
There's more than one type of protective enhancement your building may need. A three-zone system approach lets you customize protection to your specific safety and security concerns and your existing budget, combining patented DefenseLite technologies with professional assessment.
The Three Zones of Defense
Zone 1: Highest Risk
Primary entry and lobby glass. This is where an attacker will approach first and focus effort. Recommended: BulletShield ballistic glazing or DefenseLite Pro (ASTM F3561 Level 8), with AccessShield door re-glazing.
Zone 2: High to Moderate Risk
Side entry doors, exterior windows, and sidelights. Secondary points of entry that need strong forced-entry resistance. Recommended: DefenseLite Pro or DefenseLite polycarbonate shields.
Understanding Security Film Strength
Security film is a valuable layer, but its strength has limits. Here's how the main options compare:
| Protection | What It Does | Typical Zone |
|---|---|---|
| Standard safety film (4–8 mil) | Holds broken glass together; minimal delay | Not recommended for security |
| RiotLite security film (stackable to 41 mil, mechanically attached) | Delays entry; tested to ASTM F3561 Level 3 as a system | Zone 3, some Zone 2 |
| DefenseLite polycarbonate shield | Access denial; 1/4" shield over glass; anti-graffiti | Zone 2 and 3 |
| DefenseLite Pro | Prevents forced entry; ASTM F3561 Level 8; blast and hurricane tested | Zone 1 and 2 |
| BulletShield | Stops ballistic threats; UL 752 rated | Zone 1 |
Film is strongest when it's mechanically attached to the frame. Unattached film can let the entire glass pane be pushed out of the frame as a single sheet. That's why RiotLite is tested and installed as a complete system, with an attachment method, rather than as film alone.
Why System Testing Matters
Component testing evaluates a material in isolation. System testing evaluates the fully installed product, including frames, fasteners, adhesives, and installation methods, under realistic attack. A film or panel can perform well on its own and behave very differently once it's attached to a real frame. Both RiotLite and DefenseLite Pro have been tested as complete systems, so the performance you see in testing reflects what you'll get in the field.
Building Your Zone Plan
- Assessment: FSJ Tactical evaluates every elevation, entry, and interior space. Threat levels can vary from one side of a building to the other.
- Zone mapping: Each opening is assigned to Zone 1, 2, or 3.
- Product matching: The right security glazing level is recommended for each zone.
- Phasing: Zone 1 is protected first, with Zones 2 and 3 added as budgets allow.
- Installation: Systems are custom-fabricated and installed, with venting engineered for your local climate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why not put the strongest product on every window?
Because it's rarely necessary and often unaffordable. Threat levels vary from one elevation to another. Zoning puts ballistic or Level 8 forced-entry protection where an attacker will focus and uses lighter, more economical products where the risk is lower, giving you more total protection for the same budget.
How is security film strength measured?
Film and glazing systems are measured by standardized tests such as ASTM F3561 (forced entry after a simulated active-shooter attack, Levels 1–8), ASTM F1233, ASTM F588, UL 972, and UL 752 for ballistics. System testing, which evaluates the film or panel together with its attachment and frame, is far more meaningful than testing a material alone.
Is film alone enough for Zone 1?
Generally no. Primary entries and lobbies are where a determined attacker will focus. FSJ Tactical recommends DefenseLite Pro or BulletShield for Zone 1 and reserves film for lower-risk openings.
How do I know which zone each opening belongs in?
A site assessment. FSJ Tactical evaluates every elevation, entry, and interior space, then delivers a zone map and recommendations tailored to your building and budget.
